Central High School is embarking upon a new program that's the first of its kind for the area. Musically inclined students are offered a classroom space to meet, produce, rap, and join together in the spirit of artistic collaboration. The program proves to be a boon for struggling students, who become newly engaged in school and their communities.
But the program, as well as the future of the school, is thrust in limbo by a proposal for a new tax increase to build a new school and replace the decades-old, crumbling facility. Met with staunch opposition from a community wary of increased taxes and lacking faith in their government to wisely implement the funds, the proposal's path towards passage seems to be in jeopardy.
That is until the students of Rap Squad rally their peers to use their newly discovered gifts to fight for a more equitable future for the students of Helena-West Helena. Engaging, entertaining, and informative, Rap Squad is both an inspiring rare story of public schools defying the odds and a wonderfully realized microcosm of the current state of educational equity.
