Skin Deep: The Battle Over Morgellons

A nurse journeys to discover the truth behind a disease so bizarre that patients who suffer from it are regularly written off as delusional by doctors and loved ones. But who is delusional, the patients who believe or the doctors who deny?

A growing number of doctors and scientists believe that Morgellons is linked to Lyme Disease. Those who claim to suffer from Morgellons experience symptoms of fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, and mysterious multi-colored fibers coming out of lesions on their skin. However, many medical professional do not acknowledge Morgellons as a real disease and instead argue that the symptoms are either self-inflicted or imaginary, that there is no infection, and that Morgellons is simply a psychological disorder that is the product of a delusional mind. The film climaxes in a showdown at the Morgellons Conference in Austin, Texas, where bridges between doctors and patients will either be built -- or burned.

Diving headfirst into this controversy, Skin Deep is a journey that begins in solitude and alienation but ends in a community inciting public activism as evidence begins to mount.

Pi Ware is an Emmy-winning filmmaker who works across several genres -- from feature films to documentaries to concerts to world-wide competition shows. His work as a director includes the fictional films Solitude, My Beautiful Me, The Act and the documentary film, Skin Deep: The Battle Over Morgellons. As an editor Pi has crafted documentaries, indie films, and such series as America's Got Talent, Netflix's Fastest Car, Comedy Central's Roast Battle, World of Dance, American Idol and Q'Viva. Pi got his start in the film industry in Madrid, Spain, and currently lives in Los Angeles.

FILMMAKER'S STATEMENT: "There is a period of time, a time before the science of a disease is widely accepted, a time when doctors say 'What you're suggesting goes against what I learned in medical school,' a time when patients with a new disease are vulnerable to the prejudice and arrogance of otherwise well-meaning physicians. History is replete with examples of this: from ulcers, to Multiple Sclerosis to lupus. There is a period of time when the victims of a disease are 'blamed' for their disease, and the resulting shame, confusion and anger doubles their suffering. Morgellons patients are living in that time right now.

Morgellons disease is a complex issue. Not everyone on the internet who uses the term 'Morgellons' is sick with the same thing or even signifies the same malady. In fact, conspiracy theorists who claim Morgellons is government mind control via chemtrails get more YouTube hits than trained scientists explaining the infectious process of Morgellons disease.

Adding to those complexities are the psychological and neurological symptoms that Morgellons disease can cause. Because of the complexities and the stigmas surrounding Morgellons disease, the world needs a well-made documentary film that both explains and legitimizes this disease. Skin Deep is that documentary."
