Ghost in the Machine exposes the historical and philosophical underpinnings of Artificial Intelligence, not as a neutral system of algorithms that suddenly came into existence, but as a technology shaped over many decades by eugenics, misogyny, and entrenched structures of power. Rejecting the notion of AI as inevitable or objective, the film traces how myths of progress and efficiency have obscured deeper political and cultural agendas, revealing the ideological foundations beneath the systems threatening to reshape modern society.

Structured as an eight-chapter inquiry, the film blends historical excavation with contemporary analysis to confront essential questions: Who built these systems? Whose values do they encode? And who do they benefit? The story obscured by the investor-facing marketing hype of artificial intelligence emerges through conversations with over 30 insightful AI experts, historians, philosophers, sociologists, journalists, and thinkers generously discussing their work. Following a through-line that begins with Victorian eugenicists and 1900s U.S. sterilization laws which inspired Nazi Germany, the lineage of these racialized modes of thinking were thoroughly absorbed by the ascendant Silicon Valley tech-entrepeneurs of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and modified and adapted further by present day AI oligarchs.

Ghost in the Machine also demystifies the apocalyptic, magical godhood placed on AI by its most ardent proponents, who claim that it will soon reach, and then exceed, human-level intelligence. Rather, Artificial Intelligence is entirely dependent on the thorough leveraging of human labor and ingenuity, as well as limited material resources. Vast datasets of human-generated content are trained and tagged by vulnerable Kenyans workers with limited employment opportunities, who in return for their work receive meager wages and the diversion of their limited fresh water. The processing power required to operate AI is supplied by data centers that siphon the electricity and poison the drinking water of marginalized communities. And as governments work to limit regulations in service of corporate bottom-lines, seas of venture capital are pouring into a product that generates no revenue but plenty of social discord, diminishing democracies in the process. This is a film not about machines, but power, and how it reimagines itself along with changing times.

An uncompromising account detailing why this accelerated push for widespread AI adoption is occurring, Ghost in the Machine offers a throughly considered and deeply felt understanding of a group of emerging technologies that purport to impact nearly every aspect of modern life. Mandatory viewing for anyone thinking about or using AI, the film underscores how people, not technology, will determine the course of the future.
